Mukund Dev is a young and dynamic exponent of the Dhrupad style of singing, the most ancient genre of Indian classical music. He presents to promote and revive the tradition of the singing style of Swami Haridas, the great singer of the 16th century and Guru of Miyan Tansen. Mukund stands out as one of the most promising musicians striving to preserve this ancient art in the 21st century. Mukund’s approach towards presenting Dhrupad is well-researched, grounded in tradition and the authentic grammar of music and yet has a unique distinct flavour of his own creativity. Through the alap, Mukund upholds the close connection of music with the principles of “Naad Yog", which literally means yoga of sound. He is a poet and is actively involved in composing poems befitting the Dhrupad style and also has the flavour of contemporary thoughts, which attracts the younger generation towards this style of music. He is a senior disciple of the Padmashri Gundecha Brothers, and being so he is striving to preserve the prestigious music handed down to him by his Gurus.
To feel deeply the sanctity of Dhrupad music, Mukunda Dev has practiced 200 days of solitary Musical Meditation over the past 6 years in the Himalayas and other places in India. He has done this sadhana by staying silent in complete solitude, not talking to anyone, away from the technology and material world and has opened a simple path to reach the people to take Dhrupad forward. He has presented an independent education system on the easiest and most convenient way to revive this ancient style of Dhrupad by this solitary practice. Efforts are being made to make this simple education of Dhrupad music accessible to the masses by Dhrupad Music Foundation. This education can lead to an experience of ultimate peace.
Mukund Dev is the founder of the Dhrupad Music Foundation, This institution is reviving the ancient style of Indian classical music and giving music education from Gurukul Tradition all over the country and around the world.
He received his formal education in Hindustani music from Sangeet Mahavidyalaya, Bhubaneshwar During this time, he received personal guidance and advanced training from Guru Shri Vijayananda Naik (Gwalior Gharana) . After his B. Mus., he moved to Mumbai University to complete his M. Mus. and complete under Prof. Bhushan Nagdev. During this he received training in Agra Gharana style from the renowned Guru Pt. Arun Kashalkar “Rasadas”.
Mukund has had the opportunity to demonstrate his unique musical versatility by blending a variety of musical styles including Dagar Vani Dhrupad, Agra Gharana and Gwalior Gharana. Mukund has performed in many prestigious Music Festivals within India and abroad. He worked with world renowned Flamenco dancer Marisol Valderema Guerrero from Belgium. Mukund sang Dhrupad Alap in a documentary movie "The Fake Guru" Directed by Alex Zampini from Brazil. He also collaboratively worked on the Album "Devi Prayer" with Jaya Julie from Spain. Born in a family with strong musical ties, Mukund was introduced to music at a very tender age; He received his initial musical education in the Kirtan style of music from his father, Kirtankar and Khol Vadak, Late Shri Hem Chandra Sahoo. In his childhood, He also learnt light music from Shri Jhadeshwar Senapati, Shri Sunrendra Maiti and Shri Ramesh Maiti.
